Formulating Your Thesis and Then Introduction

PART 1 PART 2 PART 3
Need to clearly indicate that this is an analysis essay

Start with:

“By analyzing…”

“After analyzing…”

By looking closely at…”

After close examination…”

Tell us clearly what it is we are analyzing in this essay

In this case, we are analyzing a comic book:

Action Comics #1 by Jerry Siegel and Joel Shuster”

In this situation here I need to give the title of the comic book in italics along with the writer and artist as well

Tell us what we are going to gain by the analysis

What might the audience gain from reading your close analysis of the text

The example I gave was:

“one can better understand Superman’s roots as a social justice warrior”

Notice the use of “one” specifically aiming at a larger audience

Thesis Statement

By analyzing Action Comics #1 by Jerry Siegel and Joel Shuster one can better understand Superman’s roots as a social justice warrior.

 Creating an introduction

I have a thesis statement, I now need to lead my reader from a general opening, either a question or assumption anyone might think or know about, and then lead them to the thesis statement at the end of the Introduction

Everyone knows who Superman is, right? He’s that superhero who flies, stops bullets, and saves people in trouble. However, there is more to Superman than just that. In his early days, Superman was more than just a cookie cutter superhero, he was a warrior for social change.

Putting the Whole Thing Together

Everyone knows who Superman is, right? He’s that superhero who flies, stops bullets, and saves people in trouble. However, there is more to Superman than just that. In his early days, Superman was more than just a cookie cutter superhero, he was a warrior for social change. By analyzing Action Comics #1 by Jerry Siegel and Joel Shuster one can better understand Superman’s roots as a social justice warrior.

Notes

The purpose of the introduction is to get the audience to the Thesis Statement, see posting: Getting to Know You…Starting with an Introduction for further information.
